Preparing for Stress and Anxiety in College
Rescheduled Date to be Announced – Registration will open once a date is announced.
Presenter: Dr. Debra Salzman – Attending college provides an abundance of new challenges for students on the autism spectrum. Living in a shared living space, managing social situations, time management, developing appropriate study habits, dealing with independence, coping with changes in routines, asking for help and seeking support from various campus services are just some of the challenges facing students on the autism spectrum. These new situations can lead to increased anxiety and avoidance which can lead to decreased success in college.
This workshop is designed for parents and professionals interested in obtaining a greater understanding of the common triggers for stress and anxiety facing college students with HFA. The workshop will begin with examples of the areas that typically create more stress for those on the autism spectrum. It will be followed by a discussion of strategies that can be implemented in high school in addition to college to help students be better prepared to navigate these triggers. With these skills in place, students can be better prepared to manage the stressful and anxiety provoking situations as they arise and seek out supports to maximize success. A variety of clinical examples will be provided throughout the workshop
