Supporting the arts has always been a priority at Cornerstone – participation in artistic endeavors is an important part of The Cornerstone Experience. Our student trips include visits to the opera, the ballet, and various museums and in school we offer numerous classes in our extensive art and music studios.
Over the years we have continued to expand our arts curriculum. This year brought much excitement as our students performed for the first time in Cornerstone’s history a school musical, Zombie Prom. The students worked under the direction of our music teacher, Ms. Tobi Engstrom, and Instructional Assistant, Ms. Kilpatrick, who coached our student actors every step of the way. Many other staff members and students also contributed their time and talents to help get this exciting event up and running. The support from the entire Cornerstone School community was overwhelming.
Auditions and rehearsals started in November 2022 and opening night was set for March 2023. Students took the winter months to learn their lines and music, to practice dance routines, to build scenery, and to shop for costumes and props at local thrift shops, all while maintaining their academics and attending therapeutic sessions. Not an easy feat, to say the least.
On opening day in March, there was great energy in the air as the cast performed midday for their peers and invited guests. The Saturday evening performance was just as successful as the students performed to an audience filled with family and friends. The production was a huge success with everyone thrilled to be a part of an event that was a “first” for the school. Our student actors learned much about commitment, dedication, and perseverance, all skills that will serve them well throughout their lives after they leave Cornerstone. The rest of the school community also learned how commitment, dedication, and perseverance can help you succeed at what can sometimes seems like an overwhelming task.
We are so proud of our student performers and of the entire school community for giving their all to our first school musical. We look forward to next year’s production, which is currently under development. Expect an announcement very soon!
